Mushrooms

Let me say it again, mushrooms. Mushrooms can be a career choice. Now I know that this may sound crazy but hear me out. I’ve recently read an article that in Prince Edward Island there is a new entrepreneur whose business idea mainly focuses on mushrooms. But before we get into it, lets talk food first.

Now I’m assuming that your palette is diverse enough to try some new things, as is mine. Last year I had the luck to stumble into a grocery store in early spring and see some mushrooms that I’ve never seen before, the Morel mushroom. These mushrooms are a genus of edible sac fungi that are closely related to the simpler cup fungi. They have a distinctive honeycomb appearance and are prized by gourmet cooks, especially in Catalan and French cuisine.  They are typically found in the norther hemisphere, and their habitat stretches all the way to Pakistan. There are two different colors, the yellow morels are more commonly found under deciduous trees while the black morels are usually found in coniferous forests or in a recently burned areas.

I found the black one’s last year and boy were they expensive, I think it was about 20$ or more for a small pack of maybe eight or so. I think the high prices comes because these mushrooms are hard to cultivate at large scale and those efforts have ben rather unsuccessful. Once I got home, I was excited to try them and found a recipe that showed me how to clean them and them pan fry them with butter, thyme and some light salt. Honestly, they were a pain to clean, because you should soak them to make sure all the bugs come out and then dry them very well, but it wasn’t too wearisome.

They were phenomenal. And I didn’t share them with anyone. Ever since then I’ve kept my eye out for them and along the way I’ve found something interesting… mushroom growing kits. Which takes us back to the beginning of this post. There are two people out in PEI that are making and selling do-it-yourself mushroom growing kits. These kits come with a block of sawdust imbedded with mushroom mycelium. All you have to do is to add some humidity and warmth and watch as the mycelium transforms into mushrooms.

Rene is the mushroom expert, you can read more about her here, and Jon is the scientist who also has another company that sell hgh kits and monoclonal antibodies, if you’re even in need of those.

I looked around online and couldn’t find a link to buy her mushroom kits, but rest assured this is something that I most definitely want to try. So if you’re enthusiastic about anything, know that there are other people out there who share the same feelings and becoming an entrepreneur can take a wild and tasty turn!
